Obituary

Kathryn “Kathy” Diane Kistler, age 82, passed away peacefully at home on February 16, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Born June 11, 1943, in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, Kathy was the daughter of Gudrun and Oscar Fladmark. She later married her high school sweetheart, David Kistler, Sr., with whom she shared 66 years of marriage.

Kathy was the proud mother of three sons: Anthony (Tony), Eric, and David Jr. While she was always open about their first names, the middle names she chose remain a long-standing family mystery—kept confidential at the request (and insistence) of her children.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son Tony on May 23, 1990.

Kathy is survived by her sons Eric (Leasa) and David Jr. (Nancy); grandchildren Karsen (Alisha), Karter (IL), McKinzie, Morgan, and Zachary; and great‑grandchildren Kyler and Isla.

Kathy devoted more than 36 years to the White Pigeon Township Library, where her passion for literacy shaped generations of local families. She created the library’s first children’s story hour, and a children’s room now bears her name in recognition of her lasting impact. She played a vital role in securing millage funding and grants that made the construction of the new White Pigeon Township Library possible in 2001.

Committed to education, Kathy also served on the White Pigeon School Board, working to strengthen the quality of local schooling—an involvement made even more meaningful (and perhaps necessary) by her boys’ energetic “extracurricular activities.”

Her interests were wide‑ranging and heartfelt: gardening, reading, education, antiques, and preserving local history. Known fondly as the town historian, she frequently gave public presentations on the history of White Pigeon and the legend of Chief Wahbememe.

Kathy was a devoted wife, a caring and spirited mother, and a tireless advocate for her community. Her warmth, humor, and dedication will be deeply missed by her family and the many friends and neighbors whose lives she touched.

A celebration of life will be held later this spring.
